Righteous Living, Is It A Myth?

Is The Presence Of The Holy Spirit Necessary To The Believer’s Daily Life?

Becoming a follower of Jesus doesn’t guarantee immediate “sainthood,” prosperity, or freedom from strife. It’s a daily struggle to live a righteous life—so much so that Jesus prayed for us, as you will read below. He knew the true believer’s life would not be easy.

John 17:9-18

“I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours. 10 And all Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them. 11 Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are. 12 While I was with them [e]in the world, I kept them in [f]Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept, and none of them is lost except the son of [h]perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 I have given them Your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. 18 As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.”

It was a challenge for Jesus when He was on earth; He told us we would experience the same challenges.  He said in John 1518

“If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you.”

The “Works Of The Flesh” Still Exist In Us!

We can’t be assured of living obedient lives unless we are plugged in daily, reading the Bible, and communicating with God through prayer and in Jesus’ name. The devil’s desire to take us away from Jesus is intense, so he uses all kinds of lures to cause us to take our eyes off Jesus. There are so many opportunities for satan to trip us up.

If we’re not careful, we can unknowingly invite evil into our lives.  No Christian is so mature in the faith that he or she cannot be tempted.

But God is no stranger to human frailties.

He even addressed it in the Holy Scriptures. Although He gave us the gift of choice, it is more a curse than a gift.  This is why we need Jesus!

Jeremiah 17:9:

“The heart is deceitful above all things,
And desperately wicked;
Who can know it?’

I have a story to tell.  It’s an embarrassing one, but it needs to be said.

The Bible says in Galatians 5:22-23

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things, there is no law.”

Several days ago, I lost sight of four of the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit: love, peace, gentleness, and self-control.

I was at the Coffee Bean in Yorba Linda with my grandson, Ethan. They were having a special, and I asked the young woman, Tiara, if the special was still on. She said she didn’t know.  I thought: “You work here, and you don’t know?”

I was annoyed because she works there and she doesn’t know.

She made no effort to find out from her coworkers either.

Seeing this annoyed me even more.  Instead, she expected me to go through my email and produce the information on the special.  It was unnerving, and she was obnoxious.  I asked her why she was not asking a coworker who would know.  She refused!  This made me angry.

Long story short, I said words (not cuss words), angry words, not realizing I had allowed evil to come into the circumstance by saying harsh words, being impatient, and behaving without self-control.  Love went out the window.

I was a horrible example to the young woman, Ethan, and other employees who observed what happened.  Worse, I didn’t realize what I had done until much later and only after Ethan and I were reading his book about the Holy Spirit and His fruits, and Ethan said he said he wasn’t practicing self-control when he got mad about his schoolwork.

Ethan’s rebuke of himself convicted me.

How shameful that a 7-year-old had to be the one to show me the error of my ways!

“As it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one;”
Romans‬ ‭3‬:‭10‬ ‭ESV‬‬

The truth in these words rang in my ears like clanging bells.  It was deafening!

I was crushed to realize how I had destroyed my opportunity to minister and share the Gospel with these young people.

How then shall we live, the people of God, the followers of Jesus Christ, live?  Here’s what God says about that.

“But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.

Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.”

‭‭Colossians‬ ‭3‬:‭8‬-‭9‬, ‭12‬-‭13‬

This is why I need Jesus.  Why I must spend time with Him in prayer and soak myself in His Holy Scriptures.
